Since Android 8.0, the OS masks your icon into different shapes (circle, squircle, rounded square) depending on the device. Adaptive icons split your artwork into a foreground layer (padded to a safe zone so nothing important gets clipped by the mask) and a separate solid-color background layer, which this tool generates automatically.
Copy the mipmap-* folders directly into app/src/main/res/ (merging with your existing folders), copy values/ic_launcher_background.xml into app/src/main/res/values/, and upload ic_launcher-web-512.png separately to Google Play Console -- full instructions are included in the ZIP's README.txt.
